Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala

Introduction

The National Institute of Sports was inaugurated on 7th May 1961 to herald an era of systematic and scientific sports coaching in country. In the year 1973, the Institute was dedicated to the memory of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. After merger of SAI & SNIPES in 1987, the Institute became the Academic Wing of Sports Authority of India. It is considered a Premier Sports Institute in Asia. The Institute is located at Moti Bagh Palace, Patiala (Punjab). The total area of the Institute is 268 Acres.

Aims and Objectives of the Institute

  • To conduct short & long term academic courses in sports coaching, sports sciences and other related fields.
  • To raise the competence of the coaches through the organization of refresher courses.
  • To conduct the National Coaching Camps for elite sportspersons, for international competitions.
  • To provide scientific back up to the elite sports persons, for achievements of high level performance.
  • To organize conferences, seminars, workshops, on sports-related subjects.
  • To serve as a source of information and counseling, on sports infrastructure, through experts.
  • To implement the sports promotion schemes of SAI.
  • Organization of National level competitions of the sports promotion schemes of MYA&S.
  • Identification of sports talent at national level competitions of sports promotion schemes of Govt. of India, for further grooming.

Academic Programmes

One year diploma course was conducted by the Institute at Patiala and its three academic sub centers of, Bangalore, Kolkata & Thiruvananthapuram during the academic year 2022- 23. 331 trainees attended Diploma in Sports Coaching in eleven sports disciplines at Patiala. 255 trainees in eleven sports disciplines at SAI NS South Centre, Bangalore, 144 students in five sports disciplines at SAI NS Eastern centre, Kolkata and 13 students in Rowing, Kayaking & Canoeing at Thiruvananthapuram. In all, 743 trainees qualified to become Coaches, in 26 sports disciplines. Academic wing of SAI, NSNIS, Patiala conducted the following academic training courses under Coaches Education Programme during the year 2023-24. For the admission to Diploma Course session 2023-24, the applications were invited through online mode. Entrance examination was conducted by the National Testing Agency through online mode. Virtual interviews were also conducted through online mode. Classes of diploma courses started from 12th July 2023 and the first Semester Exam was conducted in the month of December 2023. At Patiala, 330 trainees, at Bangalore, 263 trainees at Kolkata 147 trainees and at Thiruvananthapuram 06 trainees were admitted for this Diploma Course in Coaching course during the current session i.e., 2023- 24. So far, 23,867 persons have qualified under this programme since 1961. National Sports Federations Level courses The Federation Level courses were conducted specially for trainees of Diploma in Sports coaching along with their ongoing course. The level courses were conducted in Athletics, Football, and Gymnastics, discipline.

This Two year degree Course affiliated with the Punjabi University, Patiala is conducted by the Institute at its Patiala Centre only. 17 candidates are undergoing M.Sc. in Sports Coaching in the academic session 2022-2024 in three sport disciplines (11 in Athletics, 05 in Football and 01 in Gymnastics). 22 candidates are undergoing academic session 2023-25. 258 candidates have passed in M.Sc. Sports Coaching up to 2022. The master’s Course in Sports Coaching was started in the year 1979 in nine sports disciplines.

3681 candidates have completed Six Week certificate Course in Sports Coaching in MayJune 2023 Session at SAI NS, NIS, Patiala, SAI NSSC, Bangalore, SAI NSEC, Kolkata and SAI LNCPE, Thiruvananthapuram and 3719 candidates are undergoing in the Six-Week Certificate Course in Sports Coaching during the Dec- January 2024 session at SAI NS, NIS, Patiala, SAI NSSC, Bangalore, SAI NSEC, Kolkata and SAI LNCPE, Thiruvananthapuram in 28 sports discipline.

Sports Massage course The Three-week Skill Development Programme in Sports Massage (Basic and advanced) was conducted twice in 2023 in collaboration with London School of Massage. The numbers are as below:

  • Advance Sports Massage Course - 61

Khelo India E-Khel Pathshala concept is aimed at developing the competencies of Grassroots/Community Coaches and PE teachers through provisioning of physical & online training, enabling them to subsequently provide standardized coaching. The shooting of 3 Sports Disciplines namely Archery, Boxing and Table Tennis for development of content for e-Khel Pathshala was successfully conducted and completed at SAI, NSNIS, Patiala. Sports science shooting for archery, table tennis, and boxing has been completed. Further, 10 new sports disciplines have been identified for pre-basic and basic sports shooting.

NS NIS Patiala conducted a Four-Week Sports Administration and Management Course for Physical Education Teachers of the Union Territory of Ladakh (Between the months of September to November 2023) for Total: 212 trainees.

Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Medicine (PGDSM) is being conducted by the Institute for Medical Graduates (MBBS). This course is affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, Punjab, and is recognised by the National Medical Commission. The total intake is 6 seats per year and the duration of course is 2 years.

Second batch of 6 month Certificate Courses under MoU between SAI NSNIS, Patiala and Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (Deemed University), Chennai were conducted in the disciplines of Strength and Conditioning (56), Sports Psychology (4), Sports Nutrition (44) and Sports Physiotherapy (4). A total of 108 students fulfilling eligibility criteria in the concerned subjects enrolled for the courses.

Past Champion Athletes (PCAs) Capacity Building Program in Sports Coaching 2023-24 Khelo India Past Champion Athlete (PCA) Capacity Development Program is a special course designed for the athletes hired in Khelo India Centres (KICs). Khelo India - Past Champion Athletes (PCAs) Capacity Building Program in Sports Coaching 2023-24 Program has been started from 04.12.2023 for 409 trainees (for a duration of Six weeks).

The course aims at producing competent and industry ready performance analysts, to contribute to SAI's vision of achieving sports excellence. The first batch of course started with 30 seats and the 2nd batch of course started from the month of July 2023 with 49 trainees. Three international Guest Faculties are engaged for the delivery of lectures in the course.

First P.G. Diploma in Strength & Conditioning First batch of Strength and Conditioning Course was launched in July 2023. Total 50 students enrolled for the course (35 Male, 15 F). Three international Guest Faculties are engaged for the delivery of lectures in the course.

NSNIS, Patiala, has established a partnership with the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA). PGDSC students got the optional opportunity to delve into this course, broadening their learning horizons in the field.106 students have completed level -1(in 3 batches) in the Month of Oct. 2023 and 91 students have completed level -1(in 3 batches) in the Month of Feb - March, 2024.

The Post graduate diploma in Sports Nutrition was started in the month of July 2023. The primary aim of the course is to equip the students to use nutrition related knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and wellbeing of athletes. 20 students from various parts of India have enrolled in the course. Three international Guest Faculties are engaged for the delivery of lectures in the course.

P.G. Diploma in Sports Psychology is a one year post graduate diploma course launched in Aug 2023, which trains and equips the students to use psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes. Total 25 students (09 male & 15 Female) have enrolled for the course. Two international Guest Faculties are engaged for the delivery of lectures in the course.

The First batch of P.G. Diploma Course in Exercise Physiology was launched in July 2023. This course was designed with the aim to upgrade the knowledge in Exercise Prescription programs for Sports Persons /General clients and how Physiology can be a part of the process of High-performance in the Sports Ecosystem. Total 06 students (05 male & 1 Female) have enrolled for the course. One international Guest Faculty is engaged for the delivery of lectures in the course.

National Level Symposium on Performance Analysis organized by the Sports Authority of India's Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (SAI NSNIS) Patiala on Aug 08, 2023. The theme of the symposium revolved around discussing the extent of sports performance analysis in a global context and exploring its role in high performance. This symposium delivered enriching experience for all, fostering greater understanding and knowledge exchange in the realm of Sports Performance Analysis internationally acclaimed experts.

Integrating Rehabilitation and Strength & Conditioning in High-Performance Athletes” International Level Symposium on “Synergizing Performance: Integrating Rehabilitation and Strength & Conditioning in High-Performance Athletes” organized by the Sports Authority of India's Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (SAI NSNIS) Patiala on February 23rd, 2024. The theme of the symposium revolved around a comprehensive understanding of the principles and importance of integrated rehabilitation and strength & conditioning in athletic high performance. Symposium emphasized the importance of an integrative approach, encouraging collaboration between rehabilitation specialists, strength & conditioning coaches for comprehensive athlete care. And also addressed the unique challenges faced by athletes, coaches, and sports organizations in integrating rehab and S&C practices, offering solutions and strategies to overcome barriers.

The program of Internship in Sports Science at SAI, Academic centers is to provide an opportunity and exposure to the Graduates/Post Graduates/Research Scholars enrolled in recognized universities/institutions in India and abroad in Sports Sciences/Sports Nutrition/ Exercise Biochemistry/Sports Physiotherapy/Sports Physiology/Sports Medicine/Sports Biomechanics/Sports Anthropometry Psychology/ to the Research and Development activities carried out by Sports Authority of India in state of art laboratories in the fields relevant to the sports sector.
